Is Micro Blogging Real Blogging?

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Found an interesting post today about micro blogging.

In the last couple of years that has been a growing trend called microblogging. Essentially, microblogging is throwing up a sentence or two in short bursts and many microbloggers do this several times a day. A lot of them claim it is good for business and have hundreds or thousands of people following them on the popular microblogging sites. Is it worth it?

You can read the rest of the post here.

Congress wants to stop it’s members from tweeting

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

In the New York Times there’s a report that congress wants to block it’s members from posting on websites like Twitter, YouTube, Qik, Utterz, and others.

You can read the full story here.

What started as a microprotest on Mr. Culberson’s Twitter page became a macroconflict on Capitol Hill with the two sides feuding on blogs, BlackBerrys and the old-fashioned way — face-to-face meetings in the halls of Congress. Even there technology has become a weapon in the debate.

I’m not sure what the reasoning behind this is, but in my eyes it’s definitely something that should be covered by freedom of speech. They shouldn’t have to seek approval from anyone to post anything on a public website. It’s a way for us to communicate directly with our representatives, which is exactly what we want and need.

Blocking access to any type of public communication like this is wrong.

No time to tweet? Post to your micro blog later with tweetlater

Another cool tool I found was tweetlater

Kind of an autoresponder mixed with a delayed tweet scheduler, and very cool.

Don’t have time to tweet constantly? Keep your twitter page lively with Tweetlater.

Pitch that micro recorder, you’ve got a micro blog

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

Another cool use for your micro blog is to ‘jot’ down your thoughts or things you need to get done today. If you’re in the supermarket, you can send a short ‘tweet’ to your twitter micro blog and make a note of anything and everything.

It’s kind of like having an electronic sticky note handy, except you don’t have to be sitting at your desk to put that thought right in front of you when you need it.

There are a ton of great uses for a micro blog. Use the tweet tools and send messages to yourself, your staff, or your coworkers. It’s a communication medium that has barely scratched the surface, and it’s uses are going to go farther than anyone can imagine.

Toss that micro recorder in the trash.

You’ve got a better way to track your small ‘notes to yourself’…

Business uses for micro blogs

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

With the micro blog explosion, of course businesses around the globe are looking for ways they can use them to their advantage. Blogging worked for many in their efforts to climb to the top of the search engines. Many others are hoping for the same results from their micro blogs.

But getting past the ‘what are you doing’ thing might be a bit confusing for some companies. Turning these short blog posts into a useful medium to communicate with customers is the trick. Further, who has time to update a business micro blog with the frequency they need to keep your potential customers interested?

These are all good questions to consider before your company considers micro blogging their way to the top of the search engines. But I do believe that in the long run, these little blogs are going to be extremely valuable business resources.

Staying away from the spammy, ‘buy our stuff’ posts, there have got to be a million ways companies can use these little blog beauties for client interaction.

For example:

1. Product development. Your clients are interested in new stuff. If you are working on a new project or product, you can give them up to the minute developments. The great part is that when you actually do launch your product, you should have potential clients lining up to get it. If the promotion was done right.

2. Micro Blog readers only promotions. Short term discounts and freebies to your loyal micro blog followers.

3. Staff availability. Many companies offer services in which customers have a specific person they deal with. Using a micro blog, they can instantly know if they are available or not. Or, when they might be available. Adjusting schedules and bringing up overall productivity. Knowing that ‘Bob’ is coming in at 4 p.m. might just have them wait to talk to him instead of one of your competitors…

4. Product development and beta testing. Think about having an instantly updated venue for beta testers or product developers. You can get short, specific feedback about a product or service you are developing and interact better with those that are testing it.

The list of possible business applications for micro blogs might be endless. I’m sure I’ve only scratched the surface here. But as I investigate the micro blog phenomenon I see that there are indeed some super benefits to companies that get into the mini blog game early.

Some really great info today from Build a Better Blog

So what’s the plan for today?

I’m going to spend the day scoping out Twitter apps. It’s how I ended up on the ‘build a better blog’ site.

If time permits, I’ll pop in later and post some of the stuff I come up with.

Twitter and the micro blog

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

What is a micro blog? Well, you can pop on over to Twitter and see several in action. You can even sign up for one for yourself.

Now, just so we don’t get mixed up here, I am a business blog expert, but I don’t claim to be a micro blog expert. Far from it. Until very recently, I didn’t have a friggin’ clue what a microblog was, or that they even existed.

But for months I’ve heard about Twitter, so I finally decided to pop on over there and take a peak.

Now, I’m an internet guy. I spend probably ten to twelve hours a day online. I consult with major corporations and businesses on blog and website development. So I have to say that I’ve been working too much and keeping my head in the sand. Because I was missing the whole advent of something extremely cool.

The micro blog.

So bear with me boys and girls. I’m learning about these mini blogs as we go along. You are more than welcome to help me and the other users here. Actually, I can really use the input.

All I can say right now is that I do understand the microblog infatuation. I even understand how something that seems so small can become so addictive.

So why did I build this site you might ask? Simple. I can see the value of micro blogs in front of us. I can see how a constantly updated page could have benefits in both marketing and SEO. It’s already pretty evident that Google loves these little twitter babies, and that it is only going to get better in the future.

So jump right in and become part of the microblog evolution. Help me and others understand it and lets figure out together how we can use it for solid marketing and website SEO.

I welcome you to this site and our community. Please join today and jump right into the discussion.

Let’s make microblogs.org the happening place to discuss the micro blog scene.

Kay?

By the way, what am I doing right now?

Chillin’…

Oh, and you can check out my Twitter page here
